Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Cost Accountant to join our dynamic finance team. In this pivotal role, you will play a critical part in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our cost accounting processes while driving financial insights that support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in accounting principles, hands-on experience with cost accounting methodologies, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to optimize financial performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Analysis and Cost Tracking: Collect, analyze, and validate financial data to determine the costs associated with business activities, including raw material purchases, inventory valuation, and labor expenditures. Ensure all cost-related information is accurately recorded and reported.
- Variance Analysis and Reporting: Conduct in-depth analysis of actual manufacturing costs and prepare comprehensive reports that compare standard costs to actual production costs. Identify variances, investigate root causes, and provide actionable insights to management for performance improvement.
- Financial Closing and Reconciliation: Assist in the month-end and year-end closing processes by preparing journal entries, performing account reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Focus on inventory and cost of goods sold (COGS) accounts to maintain financial integrity.
- Collaboration with Operations: Work closely with supply chain, production, and engineering teams to establish and update standard costs. Provide financial expertise to support cost-saving initiatives and process improvements, fostering a culture of efficiency and accountability.
- Budgeting and Forecasting: Contribute to the preparation of the annual operating budget and long-term financial forecasts. Analyze cost trends, assess financial risks, and recommend strategies to align expenditures with organizational goals.
- System and Process Optimization: Evaluate and enhance financial systems, including the implementation or integration of cost accounting modules within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or NetSuite. Ensure systems are configured to support accurate and timely cost accounting.
- Inventory Management: Oversee inventory valuation, cycle counting, and physical inventory audits to maintain accurate records and minimize discrepancies. Collaborate with warehouse and procurement teams to streamline inventory processes.
Qualifications and Skills
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following educational, professional, and experiential requirements:
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field is required. Advanced degrees or relevant certifications are advantageous.
- Professional Certifications: Possession of a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation is highly preferred. Additional certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) are valued assets.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years specifically focused on cost accounting within a manufacturing, construction, or supply chain environment. Experience in inventory management and financial system transitions is essential.

- Analytical and Communication Skills: Exceptional analytical abilities to interpret complex financial data, identify trends, and perform detailed variance analysis. The capacity to communicate financial concepts clearly and effectively to non-financial stakeholders, including production managers and engineers, is critical.
- Attention to Detail: A meticulous approach to data entry, financial reporting, and reconciliation to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and compliance.
- Continuous Learning: A commitment to staying current with evolving accounting standards, including GAAP and IFRS, as well as industry best practices in cost accounting.
