Sterilization Technician

Position Overview

We are seeking a meticulous and highly skilled Sterilization Technician to join our healthcare team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the proper sterilization, inspection, and preparation of medical instruments and materials to maintain the highest standards of patient safety and infection control. Your expertise will directly contribute to the efficiency and reliability of our surgical and clinical operations.

Key Responsibilities

The Sterilization Technician will perform a range of duties to uphold stringent sterilization protocols, including:

• Instrument Inspection and Identification: Thoroughly examine all used instruments and materials returned from operating theaters, wards, and clinics. Accurately identify each item by name, type, function, and size to ensure proper tracking and processing.
• Infection Control and Disinfection: Immediately disinfect contaminated materials while adhering to strict safety protocols, including the use of protective clothing and equipment to mitigate exposure risks.
• Instrument Cleaning and Sterilization: Select and operate advanced cleaning equipment, such as ultrasonic cleaners and washing machines, to ensure thorough decontamination. For thermolabile items, utilize ethylene oxide gas sterilizers, carefully selecting the appropriate cycle, duration, and gas cylinder placement. Ensure adequate aeration time to eliminate any residual gas before materials are released for use.
• Specialized Cleaning Procedures: Operate ultrasonic fine lumen cleaners and sonic irrigators, meticulously placing surgical instruments in designated baskets and transferring them through various cleaning stages at precise intervals to achieve optimal cleanliness.
• Instrument Assembly and Testing: Reassemble cleaned surgical instruments into organized sets, inspecting each item for functionality, sharpness, and alignment. Verify that all instruments meet medical and safety standards before proceeding to the packaging stage.
• Sterile Packaging and Documentation: Pack instrument sets using sterile techniques and medical arrangement procedures. Label each set with official names, expiry dates, packing dates, and batching codes to ensure traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Operating Room Preparation: Assemble and prepare a wide range of operating materials, including lithotomy and abdominal sets, surgeon’s gowns, and other essential packs required for daily surgical procedures. Ensure all materials are readily available and properly sterilized for seamless theater operations.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Education: Graduation from a reputable university with a relevant qualification in healthcare, medical technology, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of one year of hands-on experience in sterilization, preferably within a healthcare or clinical setting.
• Certification: Valid licensure in sterilization, demonstrating compliance with industry standards and regulations.
• Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with sterilization equipment, including ultrasonic cleaners, ethylene oxide sterilizers, and automated washing machines. Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are essential.
• Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, communicating clearly and coordinating efforts to maintain seamless sterilization workflows.
